Art Houz, the in-house art gallery of Jenneys Residency (P) Ltd has on display ‘Traces of Journey’, which has brought seven artists together. Ameen Khaleel, Lauimari Maudet, Teppo Valkama, Sidharthan, Subair M, O. Sunder and Udayakumar T.R., have displayed their recent works at Art Houz.

This exhibition was inaugurated by G. Viswanathan, President, Vishwa & Devji Diamonds Pvt Ltd, Coimbatore.

“Traces highlights the recent phase in the artistic journey of the seven artists. Their works taken together can be seen as various ways of addressing the complex question of visuality, especially those put forth by an environmentalist critique of hegemony,” Bridget Shibu, Operations Manager, Art Houz, says.

Artist Ameen Khaleel has made use of diverse materials and objects. His work titled Kanji Kuzhi brings to light the old system of serving food to Dalits in pits that were made on the ground. This practise was religiously followed in places like Alapuzha, Kottayam and Idukki districts in Kerala. Ameen has made use of sand on drill cloth and digitally transferred images with diligence to bring to light a memory from the pages of history.

Yet another set of paintings that caught our attention are the landscapes in artists Sidharthan’s paintings. These are no ordinary landscapes. They are the ones that are undergoing many changes often due to the construction works especially of bridges and other infrastructure.

Also on display are the untitled works of artist Teppo Valkama. The artist has used pigment prints on canvas to bring out various off-beat subjects. Surfaces with peeling paint, marks of nails, small holes on the surface, a door in front of which a curtain made of thick, dirty sack cloth hangs, have been beautifully brought to light by this artist.

All the works of artist O. Sunder are acrylic on canvas and this artist has used shades of grey. However, his works titled Ammu 1 and Ammu 7 sport vivid hues. Through his work this artist has brought out the women in various situations.

Traces of Journey will be open to public for viewing until February 20. Entry to Art Houz is free. Gallery visiting hours 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Gallery is open on all days. For information call 90036-49127.
