A group of residents of Kittampalayam village near Sulur threatened to go on a mass hunger strike if the district administration failed to take action against their Panchayat president for amassing wealth to the tune of Rs.7 crores, by giving approval for illegal construction sites.

Armed with placards, nearly 20 villagers, including area councillors, protested outside the district collectorate, stating that the woman president had allegedly accepted money for giving clearance to the sites. They said that only six cents were kept as reserved site for 17 acres of land for sites.

The issue was previously raised about five months ago, but the villagers said that the administration did not take any action against the president. Stating that approval was given for a 30,600 sq. ft. land free of cost, they pointed out that the water tanks and roads laid in a 360-acre land were missing.

The protesters, mostly women, warned that they would go on fast from February 15 if the district administration failed to hold a proper inquiry and take action against the Panchayat president.
