With the tremendous improvement in the level of tennis being played in the country and the fitness of its players, Sania Mirza expressed confidence that India will catch up soon with other countries.

Replying to a specific question on the reason why Indian players seem to be good only in doubles tournaments, she said, “In the men’s game, after Vijay Amrithraj, we had only doubles players. Every race, so to say, has its strength and weakness. In India and this part of the subcontinent, players have excellent eye-and-hand coordination, which works in doubles tournaments,” she said. “We don’t have the legs and fitness like those in European countries and America.”

“30 or 35 years after Vijay Amrithraj, I was the only Indian to reach the top 50.I hope it will not take that much time for another person to repeat this feat,” she said, adding that she was very fortunate to have a very long career of 11 years in the game.

Sania will leave for the US tonight to prepare for the French Open.
