Despite receiving negative reviews and mixed reaction from the audience, Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off Venom has turned out to be a huge success at the box office. Made at a budget of $100 million, Venom had made a fair amount of money in its home market but it was the overseas box office that showed the Tom Hardy starrer a lot of love. And earlier this month on November 9, Venom opened in China to a thundering response.
Before the release of Venom, China was going through a box office lull but the movie made a record-breaking $215 million in just 12 days of the release. For those unaware, Venom had opened to $111 million in its opening weekend in China becoming the second highest superhero opener of all time. After its 12 days run in China, Venom has amassed a total of $215 million. The superhero movie is now only behind Avengers: Infinity War which made $359.5 million upon its release earlier this year.
At the worldwide box office Venom now stands at $780 million and will soon become the fifth highest grossing movie of 2018 only behind Avengers: Infinity War ($2.04 billion), Black Panther ($1.34 billion), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ($1.30 billion) and Incredibles 2 ($1.24 billion).
Venom has beaten the lifetime total of Deadpool 2 and will go past Deadpool in next few days. The movie has also beaten the first Guardians of the Galaxy. As far as China box office is concerned, Venom has beaten Dangal, Avatar, Rampage, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The Meg etc. In case you are wondering Dangal had made $193 million at China box office.
