Rahul Gandhi in Amethi today after 7-month gap and a row over local administration’s nod

Rahul Gandhi’s Amethi visit has already courted controversy after the local administration asked the 47-year-old MP to postpone his trip over security concerns.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will start his three-day visit to his Lok Sabha constituency Amethi today after a gap of more than seven months.

Rahul’s Amethi visit has already courted controversy after the local administration asked the 47-year-old MP to postpone his visit.

In a letter to Rahul Gandhi, the local administration said that police are already deployed to maintain law and order during Durga Puja and Muharram and therefore the administration will be unable to ensure adequate security to the Congress vice-president.

The letter angered the Congress which alleged that the administration was trying to prevent Rahul Gandhi from visiting Amethi. Congress spokesperson from UP, Akhilesh Pratap Singh said, “BJP is scared of Rahul Gandhi. BJP government in Uttar Pradesh doesn’t want Rahul Gandhi to visit his constituency before Amit Shah’s tour.”

Subsequently, the Congress vice-president received the green signal from the administration to go ahead with his Amethi visit and was also assured of protection.

“We urged Rahul Gandhi in a confidential letter to postpone his visit due to security reasons on account of Durga Puja, Muharram and Gandhi Jayanti, but the visit could not be postponed,” siad Amethi district magistrate Yogesh Kumar.

The Congress vice-president will participate in a choupal at Jagdishpur at 2 pm today following which he would tour the area and spend the night at Munshiganj guest house. He had held a public meeting at Jagdishpur more than seven months ago.

On October 5, Rahul Gandhi would meet locals at the guest house and then leave for Rajiv Gandhi Degree College where he would meet party workers. Later, he would reach Salon Assembly constituency and spend the night at a guest house in Rae Bareli.

On the third day of his visit, October 6, the Congress vice-president would meet people at the guesthouse in Rae Bareli and then tour the area. He will leave for Delhi by evening.
