OnePlus 6 to have iPhone X-like notch because it is future, says Carl Pei

In a few weeks from now (hopefully) OnePlus will launch its flagship OnePlus 6 phone. And following the general trend this year, the OnePlus 6 too will come with a screen that has a notch similar to that of the iPhone X. This has been confirmed by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, who told tech news site the Verge that OnePlus 6 is going to come with the largest screen we have seen in a OnePlus phone.

The bit about the OnePlus 6 notch comes hours after Evan Blass, who goes by name @evleaks on Twitter, revealed the first photo of the OnePlus 6. That photo showed the half of the phone, and revealed that at least one variant of the phone will have the rear cover with wood pattern. On Wednesday, OnePlus revealed the photo of the top portion of the OnePlus 6 screen showing its notch.

Pei said that the experience with the notch will be much better on the OnePlus 6 compared to what other Android makers may offer because engineers and product experts in his company have tested the OnePlus 6 notch with over 1000 popular apps and have customised the experience to ensure that consumers don’t get bothered by the notch

Carl Pei said that the notch in the OnePlus 6 will be smaller than what people have seen in the Apple iPhone X. But it will be bigger than what the Essential phone sports. The OnePlus 6 will also come with a slight chin, unlike the iPhone X, because according to Pei currently there is no way for Android phone makers to do away with the chin.

So why is OnePlus is putting a screen with a notch in the OnePlus 6? It’s the future suggests Pei, although he says that if Apple had not done it with the iPhone X the trend would have arrived a bit later. “Maybe not as fast. But we have access to the roadmaps of all the screen manufacturers, and when they gave us the opportunity to make cutouts at the top of the screen, it just made sense,” he said in his talks with the Verge. He added that Apple helps the rest of the industry move faster on certain things.

While OnePlus joins Apple, and countless others that have adopted the notch in the screen of their premium phones, there is one area where the company is not yet ready to follow the iPhone maker. And this is the headphone 3.5mm jack, which Apple has removed from the iPhone. But the OnePlus 6 will come with a headphone jack. This was confirmed through the image that leaked last night on the Twitter timeline of Evleaks. On Wednesday too, Pei confirmed that the headphone jack will continue to be there in the OnePlus.

OnePlus 6 specs

Other than revealing a design with a notch, Pei doesn’t talk much about the OnePlus 6. He does say that the phone will come with the largest screen ever put in a OnePlus 6, so it is safe to say this will be different from the OnePlus 5T screen. Hopefully, it will be as good as the OnePlus 5T display when it comes to colour and contrast. Given that the size of the OnePlus 6 screen is going up, it is certain that its resolution too will be higher. For quite some time, OnePlus has stuck to 1080P display in its flagship phone whereas other companies have moved to 1440P. Chances are that the OnePlus 6 will change that.

Pei on Wednesday also said that while the OnePlus 6 will come with face unlock feature, it will use the front camera and will be similar to that of the OnePlus 5T. This means the OnePlus 6 will not have the kind of depth sensing module that Apple put in the iPhone X.

But there is one area where the OnePlus 6 is going to be similar to the iPhone X: gestures. OnePlus 6 has apparently worked on a number of gestures that users will be able to utilise when they are using the OnePlus 6. These could be gestures to switch between, to close apps, to go to home etc.

The OnePlus 6 is likely to launch within weeks, possibly in May or early June. For now there is no word on OnePlus 6 India price of its launch in India. The OnePlus 6 is likely to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, will come with at least 6GB RAM, dual cameras at the back, single camera on the front, a fingerprint scanner on the back, at least 64GB storage and features like Dash Charging. It will use OnePlus Oxygen OS based on Android Oreo.
