Heavy rains lashed Mumbai since Sunday, claiming seven lives in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane. Mumbaiites can expect more showers today. The transport system was badly hit, as roads in certain parts of the city were flooded, leading to traffic snarls.

According to the India Meteorological Department, 250mm rainfall was recorded in parts of Mumbai and Palghar, while 230mm rainfall was recorded in Dahanu on June 24 and June 25. On Monday morning the Santacruz observatory recorded rainfall of 231.4mm in 24 hours. For the first time the city recorded rainfall in excess of 200 mm this year.

A wall of a building in Wadala East area collapsed following incessant rain yesterday morning, which led to a road caving in. Several vehicles were also damaged after the wall collapsed.

Due to heavy rains, more than 140 train services on both Central and Western Railway were cancelled on Monday. According to the cell, several road diversions have been affected in areas most prone to waterlogging and traffic snarls.

Mumbai Police had issued alerts on heavy traffic congestion on the Malad and Andheri subways, while Milan and Khar subways were closed owing to excessive waterlogging.

Two persons were killed last evening after a tree fell on them in south Mumbai, a official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s disaster management unit said.

In Thane, a 13-year-old boy was killed and his parents were injured when a wall collapsed on their house at Wadol village, a regional disaster management cell official said.
