Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much-delayed period drama, which finally hit the screens on January 25, is unstoppable at the box office. Padmaavat starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh is casting its magic at the ticket windows with each passing day. After entering the Rs 50-crore club within two days of its release (including paid previews), the film has now crossed the Rs 100-crore mark.

According to early estimates, Padmaavat has collected Rs 30 crore approx on Sunday, thus taking the total to Rs 113 crore approx.

Thanks to Karni Sena, Bhansali’s film grabbed eyeballs much before its release, and the anticipation in the fans was palpable. And this eagerness translated into big numbers at the ticket windows.

The film has been in the eye of a storm ever since the filmmaker began shooting in Jaipur. Several groups have been protesting against Padmaavat, alleging that the film distorts history and demeans the honour of Rajput queen, Rani Padmini.

Padmaavat is a re-imagining of Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s epic poem Padmavat, written in the 16th century. It revolves around Alauddin Khilji’s siege of Chittorgarh fort in 1303, in an attempt to capture the beautiful Rani Padmini, who committed jauhar (self-immolation) to avoid falling into his clutches.
