Shillong remains under curfew as protesters gherao state secretariat

The situation grew tense in Shillong’s Motthran area and Ledo on Monday night, however it was kept under control after police and central forces were deployed across the area and curfew was imposed.

Khasi protestors gheraoed the state secretariat in the city at night. A minorities commission panel led by Manjeet Singh Rai will visit Shillong today.

Clashes broke out between members of two communities in Shillong after a bus conductor was allegedly assaulted by a group of residents in Them Lew Mawlong area on Thursday.

The local administration imposed curfew in many parts of the city but failed to keep protestors away from the streets.

A group of people reportedly tried to protest on Monday in Shillong’s Mawkhar area after a night-long curfew. A van taking a patient to hospital was attacked and overturned.

Three CRPF personnel were injured after a mob attacked security forces by pelting stones and also hurled petrol bombs. A local journalist was also injured in the clashes.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Sunday said the clashes were not communal in nature. He said that the clashes in parts of Shillong were given a communal colour by vested groups and a section of the media outside the state, he said.
