18 get 7-yr jail term in Wagamon SIMI terror camp case

Thiruvananthapuram: The NIA court in Kochi today sentenced 18 persons to seven years imprisonment in connection with the SIMI terror camp case in Wagamon.

The court had convicted them yesterday. It had absolved 17 accused for want of evidence in the case in which there were charges against a total 35 persons. The case pertains to banned outfit Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) conducting arms training from December 10 to 27, 2007, at Kolahalamedu in Wagamon in Idukki on terror activities like using automatic weapons and making of bombs. Many terror activities including those at Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Surat and Varanasi, had links to the camp.

Similar camps were earlier held at Maninagar in Gujarat, Pithambar in Madhya Pradesh and Gokul Road in Karnataka The cream of 50 members from these camps were trained in Wagamon. The Kerala police intelligence wing got wind of the training due to which it was closed abruptly.
