Plea to implement Avinashi-Athikadavu project

The Kongunadu Jananayaka Katchi today urged the State Government to give implement the long pending Avinashi-Athikadavu water project.

In a letter to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, the party convener, G.K. Nagaraj, said water level below the ground had gone below 1000 feet in the region. Of the total 570 water bodies, 500 had already become arid especially in Coimbatore, Tirupur and Erode districts, he said.

Stating that the Government had sanctioned Rs. 3 crores for the project after the people of the three districts staged a fast a few months ago, Nagaraj urged her to approach the centre with a proper plan for the Rs. 1,832 crore project for approval.

“This project will not only help the farming community, but also fulfill the drinking water needs of people of three districts,” he added.

“The Chief Minister should pay special attention to the project as it is the lifeline of Kongu region,” Nagaraj said.
