The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa announced in the Legislative Assembly, on September 14, the formation of the Tamilnadu Fibernet Corporation, to provide internet services to 12524 villages in the state.
Established at an estimated cost of Rs.3000 crores, the Tamilnadu Fibernet Corporation will bring internet to all the villages in Tamil Nadu. She further added that the Centre has approved the implementation of Bharathnet through the state governments, and that the TACTV Corporation has signed an MOU with the RailTel Corporation of India, one of the largest neutral telecom infrastructure providers in the country.
The scheme will provide broadband and internet services, including internet television, to houses in the villages across Tamil Nadu.
