Coimbatore : CPM Lok Sabha member PR Natarajan on Saturday promised various farmer associations that he would take up their problems, including the issue of high tension lines above farmlands, with the district administration.
Leaders of various farmer associations met Natarajan and discussed the issues at the party office.
Besides the routine problem of water scarcity and low price for yields, farmers were now facing the problem of setting up of HT power lines through their lands, making them infertile in the long run, they said..
They complained that officials came with police to threaten them if they opposed it and even did not spare womenfolk.
They sought the intervention of the MP in this regard, party sources said.
Natarajan assured the representatives of farmers of taking up the issue with the District Collector and finding a solution.
Tamil Nadu Farmers Association president VP Elangovan, secretary VR Palanisamy, office-bearers of Farmers Protection Committee, Rajendran, Ponnusami and secretary of Kongu Peravai Periyasami were among those present during the discussion.
