A human chain was formed in the city to condemn the reported move of Kerala Government to construct a check dam across Bhavani river.

The front ranking leaders of major political parties, farmers associations and trader bodies joined hands to form the chain in Gandhipuram area and raised slogans against the move by Kerala.

General Secretary of Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam K. Ramakrishnan, who spearheaded the agitation, said Kerala has already dumped the materials at the site and works started for the construction of the dam.

“The dam will lead to the acute water shortage in Coimbatore, Erode and Tirupur districts and nearly five lakh acres of land will become barren,” he said.

Former DMK Minister Pongalur N. Palanisamy, Kongunadu Jananayaka Katchi Founder-Convener G.K. Nagaraj were among those participated.

The participants raised slogans against Kerala Government and threatened to stop supply of vegetables, eggs and other essential commodities from Tamil Nadu.
