Coimbatore : Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi (KMDK) on Tuesday condemned the Centre for giving its clearance to Karnataka’s draft proposal to build a reservoir across the Cauvery at Mekedatu.

Despite all political parties in Tamil Nadu opposing the proposal, the Environment and Forest Ministry favouring Karnataka and giving clearance was condemnable, KMDK general secretary ER Eswaran saidbin a statement here.

Karnataka was continuously taking efforts to prevent the flow of Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu and clearance given by the Centre was not acceptable, he said.

The dam across the Mekedatu would adversely affect the livelihood of the thousands of farmers and agriculture in the region would be totally destroyed, he claimed.

He urged the Centre to withdraw the clearance given to Karnataka.
