Chennai: Transport Minister MR Vijayabaskar announced in the Assembly today that the Monorail project will be implemented in Chennai along two routes, and will be integrated with the current and upcoming transport systems in the city.
According to the minister, the Monrail routes – from Porur to Vadapalani (20.68 km), and from Vandalur to Velacheri (22.80 km) – will cover approximately 43.48 kilometres.
Vijayabaskar also informed the Assembly that work has begun to create a joint Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA), to bring all the transport entities together in the city, including the Metro Rail, Metropolitan Road Transport Corporation (MRTC), Chennai Corporation, Chennai Traffic Police, and the CMDA.
All over the world, Monorail trains are used in congested areas. The train runs on a single concrete slab, narrower than a car, and is a very cost-efficient manner of transportation.
