Ordinance on Jallikattu gets Governor nod

The Tamil Nadu Governor, Ch. Vidyasagar Rao, on Saturday gave his approval for an ordinance to conduct Jallikattu in the State.

The ordinance was signed by Rao, who came from Maharashtra this evening for this specific purpose. Accordingly, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act will be amended through this Ordinance.
Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam said all the hurdles have been cleared to conduct Jallikattu.

“As a follow up to the meeting with Prime Minister on January 19, to enable the conduct of Jallikattu, the Government of Tamil Nadu issued an Ordinance after obtaining the necessary prior instructions of the President of India as envisaged under Article 213 of the Constitution,” Panneerselvam said in a statement.

The Ordinance was promulgated on Saturday and Jallikattu will be conducted with customary fervour all over the State with all necessary precautions. The amended Act will be passed by the Assembly on January 23, he said.

Thanking the Prime Minister for being instrumental in getting the clearances of various Ministries and that of the President within a day, Panneerselvam also thanked the lakhs of students and youths, who had been staging demonstrations peacefully at Marina and at various parts of the State.
