Five students of a government higher secondary school in Tirupur were today placed under suspension for reportedly consuming liquor and attending class, and bursting crackers on campus.

While the teachers were busy with classes, the students burst crackers in the playground of the Nanjappa Municipal Boys Higher Secondary School yesterday, police said. As the matter was reported to authorities, Chief Education Officer S Murugan arrived at the school and conducted an inquiry with 30 senior students today.

The inquiry revealed that the five students, studying in class 11 and 12 were behind the episode, and two of them were reportedly drunk and others were smoking in the campus, police said.

The students were placed under suspension for 10 days. The incident sent shock waves among the parents concerned about the future of their wards.
