KOTTAYAM: Police on Tuesday arrested advocate Shabeena Choorapilakkal, who was leading a hunger strike for the last three days in protest against the construction of Malapuram Kotakkal National Highway bypass.

A people’s collective began protest against the construction of the bypass by removing paddy fields and water bodies in the area. A medical team examined Shabeena in the morning but did not find anything serious in her health condition.

However, she was arrested based on the result of an expert medical team and taken to a hospital. As she was not willing to walk to the police vehicle, she was forcefully carried away.

The protesters are demanding the Government drop the plan to construct the bypass through the 4.4 km stretch from Swagathamadu to Palachimaadu.
