For honour killing, there is no need to go all the way to the NCR region, where the famously infamous Talwars allegedly killed own daughter for suspected relationship with domestic servant. But these proved only allegations and the Talwars are now exonerated by the Allahabad High Court and are set to walk out free from prison on Monday.
Closer home in Tamil Nadu, parents of a forward caste teenger from Kilavaneri village in Tirumangalam taluka of Madurai district admitted to police they killed their daughter.
Her crime : developing relationship with few boys in the village and one of them a dalit. And this resulted in a series of rage-full exchanges at home. On October 7, the parents of the girl, complained to then police that their daughter committed suicide as she failed in her Class X exams.
Police station in Tirumangalam registered a case of suicide and sent the body to post mortem in a government hospital.
It was the hospital doctors who suspected foul play and alerted police on Thursday that they found strangulation marks on her body. On sustained interrogation, the parents admitted to killing their daughter. The duo of Kilavaneri village in Tirumangalam district were arrested by police on Friday and produced before a magistrate who remanded them in judicial custody for 14 days.
They admitted to the police that they were extremely unhappy with their daughter who was bringing a bad name to the family due to her relationships with boys of the village. They suspected that she developed illicit relations with a boy who was a dalit.
The incident is of October 7 night. But the post mortem report came to the police on Thursday. On questioning parents — R Gnanavel (father) and Sitalakshmi – they told police they strangled their daughter to death and tried to pass it off as suicide.
Police are making further investigations and could question local boys of the village, a police officer in Tirumangalam said.
