Kottayam: The Congress-led UDF on Monday said it would be the first to oppose implementation of President’s rule in the State.

Moving an emergency notice during question hour, K Muraleedharan of Congress said the CPM was responsible for creating a situation for the visit of Union Defence Minister Arun Jaitley to the State.

He also demanded discussion of the deterioration of law and order in the State, adding that 18 political murders were reported in the state after CPM-led LDF came to power. Of them, 17 were due to BJP-CPM clashes.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said there were intelligence reports that the BJP would resort to violence to divert the attention of the people from medical college bribery scam. Steps were in place to prevent recurrence of any such violent incidents, he added.

The vigilance probe into the scam was going on satisfactorily, Pinarayi said.

When the Opposition demanded handing over the probe to a Central agency, he said this could be considered only after the vigilance probe was over. The Opposition came to the Assembly with banners and placards demanding an end to political violence in the State.
