Charter on child safety launched

Corporation Commissioner Dr. K. Vijayakarthikeyan launched the ‘Public Charter on Child Safety’ here on Friday. The 10-point charter for child safety has been prepared by Young Indians (Yi), which is part of Confederation of Indian Industry.

The charter is an initiative under the Masoom scheme of the CII that has carried out child safety activities in around 40 cities across the country. The Coimbatore chapter of Young Indians has been involved in sensitising children on their safety in Corporation, Government and private schools for the past two years. The charter will be placed in the form of hoardings in schools, hospitals and public places.

A short film Hiroshima – A Mother’s Prayer was screened during the event at Kikani School Auditorium, in which 13 members of International Interfaith Council on Ethics Education from 10 nations took part. Masue Suzuki from Japan led a silent dedication.

In his address, the Commissioner said the project was a starting point for the administration to go beyond the goals. “There are five lakh families in Coimbatore and we must be able to go beyond the goals that we have now for the welfare of the public,” he said.

Dr Mustafa Ali, General Secretary, GNRC,Arigatou International-Nairobi, launched the country wide initiative India Poverty Solutions.

Fred Nyaber, Director, Interfaith Initiative to End Child Poverty honoured young achievers of Coimbatore. Thematic presentations by Shree Natyanikethan School of Dance, Vidhya Vanam School, PSGR Krishnammal Higher Secondary School and G-18 Public Charitable Trusts were the main highlights of the event.

Over 1000 students from 45 schools and colleges in Coimbatore participated.
