My head hangs in shame, says Kerala Speaker

Kerala Assembly Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan on Tuesday said that his head hung in shame to see a people’s representative trampling the pangs of a woman who was subjected to abduction and abuse.

“One of the reasons for the Mahabharata war was Dushasana’s act of stripping Draupati, who was the wife of his brother. The end result of it was a disaster. It is sad that even after so many decades such incidents are being repeated even in a progressive State like Kerala,” the Speaker said in his Facebook post.

“Those who spit on faces should not forget that there are precedents for how to react on that as well. My head hangs in shame as such statements have come from people’s representatives who are bound to lead society with high moral values,” Sreeramakrishnan said without naming Independent MLA from Poonar P.C. George.

The MLA had accused the female actor (who was abducted and assaulted in a moving car in February) of lying as she had gone to work the next day. He refused to revoke his statements. George, who has been supporting actor Dileep (who is an accused in the assault case), was recently in the news for showing a pistol at protesters in an estate at Kottayam.

The Speaker’s statement comes on the day when the assaulted actor wrote to the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to bring to light the victimisation she has been subjected to.
