“The moment an order is passed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the order gets implemented immediately. That is the advantage of taking the matter to NGT,” said Dr. Justice Jawad Rahim.

Talking to reporters here at Avinashilingam University, he outlined the importance of bringing issues to the notice of the NGT rather than expecting the problems to be solved by the tribunal.

“The National Green Tribunal Act was enacted in 2010. The difference between regular judicial bodies and NGT is that the orders given by the NGT are immediately implemented. For example, if we receive a complaint about an industry or a structure harming the environment, we will order the immediate shutting down of the industry/building,” he added.

Justice Jawad also explained the steps the Municipal Corporations could take to avoid accumulation of solid waste.

Earlier in his keynote address at the inaugural function of a one-day seminar on ‘Emerging Trends in Green Technology’, he explained about the contribution one could make towards creating a sustainable environment.

“I am aware of the environmental scenarios now. But, when I was about 10 years old, I had unknowingly started harming the environment,” he said.
