Madras High Court on Monday directed the Union and Tamil Nadu governments to work out all possibilities for banning online Blue Whale game which claimed the lives of several teenagers across the globe and in the country.

After taking the issue suo motu, Justices K K Sasidharan and G R Swamination of the Madurai Bench also directed the IIT-Madras director to explore the possibility and give suggestion for banning the Russian-based game after impleading in the case.

The State Government told the court that the student from Trichy, who committed suicide, perhaps to complete the last task of the game, also shared it with 75 persons. Precautionary measures were being taken.

The judges said Tamil Nadu police should issue strict warning to those who shared the harmful game.

Though senior police officials said they were taking steps, the court said all the authorities concerned should monitor closely and prevent further spread of the game through sharing.

They also observed that awareness should be created especially among students about the implication of the game and asked State Information Technology Department to give suggestions.

The judges posted the matter for further hearing to September 7.
