Bringing out the story telling talent in children

A number of students from various schools in the district participated in the story telling competition at the PSG College of Arts and Science on Wednesday.
Organised by Nila Mutram, the readers club of the college, the event saw students coming out with stories – real, historical and even their own versions.
The event – Karisal Thatha 95 – was organised to commemorate the 95th birth anniversary of folklore artist Ki. Rajanarayananan (popularly known as KiRa), who received the Sahitya Academy award in 1991 for his work Gopallapurathu Makkal.
“The main aim was to enhance the story telling skills in children,” an organiser told The Covai Post.
P. Uma Maheswari, teacher of Vidya Vanam School in Anaikatty said every child has its own way of telling stories.
“Some of them would have heard the stories from elders. Some children even come out with their own stories, which really takes us by surprise.The story when narrated in their vattara valakku (regional dialect) is understood better by the kids. These events help the kids in developing story telling skills,” she added.
At the end of the event, every participant was given the title Kadhai Solli.
