Hindi Day celebrations turn mere formality

Hindi Day celebrations on September 14 have become a formality with newspaper advertisements by public-sector companies. It would have been better if these companies adopted Hindi name for them like Doordarshan. Even dual naming like All India Radio and Akashvani should be done away by retaining only Hindi names. Despite New Delhi Municipal Council making it clear that Sansad Marg should be written in Roman script also, many government departments, ministries and private companies use translated version as Parliament Street.

Presently even some prominent Hindi newspapers pollute Hindi by using English words not only in Devnagri script but even in the Roman one. Many a times they even use such English words as are not so common as compared to their Hindi equivalents.

Even the then UN General Secretary Ban Ki Moon appreciated Hindi at the recently held World Hindi Conference at New York. The then US President George Bush accepted Hindi to be among popular world-languages and even considered it being taught in the US. Unfortunately, here the government and the media are busy in upgrading English at the cost of Hindi. It has to be noted that most developed countries such as China, Russia, France, Germany and Japan proudly use their own languages at all international levels.
