DMK MLA N. Karthik on Thursday urged Food Corporation of India (FCI) authorities to take steps to stop the spread of insects and flees from their godown in Avarampalayam to the residential areas.

Talking to reporters after inspecting the areas in and around the godown, following complaints from the residents, Karthik said the 1.10 lakh tonnes of grains can be stored in 12 separate godowns constructed in 87 acres.

The insects from the godown were creating a nuisance in the households in the neighbouring 10 km area. “These flees are found everywhere in the houses, even in utensils and the plates. Sometimes they even sit on the eyes and ears of the people, disturbing their sleep,” he alleged.

Stating that he had taken steps to control the spread, when he was the Deputy Mayor a few years back, Karthik asked the FCI authorities to adopt modern scientific methods to check the spread of the flees, as the children were most affected.

The flees are also spreading in nearby locality like Peelamdeu, Singanallur, the constituency he is representing, SIHS Colony and considering the grievances of the residents, he suggested to the authorities to explore the possibility of covering the the areas with green clothes to a certain heights to prevent the insects entering households.
