As many as 294 Dalits of Irugur Town panchayat, who had received land pattas from the Government some 20 years ago, have not been given possession of the same. Condemning this, the Anti-Untouchability Movement staged a protest on their own lands on Wednesday. It was held to commemorate Sreenivasa Rao memorial day.

The district authorities ensured them that the land would be handed over to them. Following this, a board bearing the name ‘Sengodi Nagar’ was erected there.

Marxist member P.R. Natrajan, Anti-Untouchability Movement Joint-secretary U.K. Sivagnanam, and Women’s Association VCN Amirtham led the Dalits and hundreds of people who had gathered in their support.

Thasildars Sekar (Sulur) and Subramani arrived at the spot and engaged in talks with P. Sampath, P.R. Natrajan and U.K. Sivagnanam. Officials promised to hasten all the processes and hand over the measured lands to the beneficiaries.
