Kochi: At a time when Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is going soft on the encroachers, his arch rival and former CM V S Achuthanandan has sought stringent action against land grabbers.

Chairman of the State Administrative Reforms Commission, Achuthanandan has asked Pinarayi and Revenue Minister not to protect the encroachers under any circumstances. Called the ‘Hero of Munnar demolition mission’, he has shot letters to both chief minister in this regard.

“The land grabbers are trying to retain the encroached land under the garb of protecting poor farmers. There should be no leniency towards the encroachers who are out to gobble the Kurinjimala sanctuary,”he said. The sanctuary was declared a protected area on October 7, 2006 by the Achuthanandan government to protect the endangered Neelakurunji blooming in an area of 32 sq km in Vattavada and Kotakamboor villages in Idukki district.

Things are going to be tough for Pinarayi if VS toughens his stance, especially when the former is at loggerheads with one-time ally CPI on encroachment issue.
