As part of the Accessible India Campaign, Swarga Foundation opened a restroom service for children with disabilities at the Government Higher Secondary School in Vagarayampalayam in the district on December 4.

This was in observance of the International Day for People with Disabilities on December 3 globally by the United Nations since 1992. It is to promote the rights of and create awareness about persons with disabilities.

Foundation Trustee TS Guruprasad said accessibility projects had been initiated in Corporation Government Schools across Coimbatore. The aim was to make government schools with wheelchair-friendly environment and provide accessibility to the right to education for differently-abled children.

He said the campaign was launched with the Coimbatore Corporation on December 3, 2016, and the first work was completed at the Corporation Boys Higher Secondary School, Ramanathapuram, this May. It was to bring back children with disabilities to school and empower them through education.

This year the organisation will introduce the programme in five more schools. These schools will now have ramps for access to classrooms on the ground floor, wheelchair for toilet access, grab bars and convenient placement of utilities to help children use wheelchairs.
