Kochi: Financial irregularities have put Syro Malabar Church representing the Catholic denomination in the dock even as the Church admitted lack of transparency in financial dealings in the institution.

On the other hand, a forum has come to the rescue of the Church by countering the allegations.

While the forum has warned a section of priests against making allegations against Major Archbishop Cardinal Mar Allencherry, the section of priests have damned the warning. It said it would speak out the truth against anyone involved in any irregularity.

The ‘Save Syro Malabar Forum’ would unleash the black deeds of the priests if they continued with their campaign, State convener Kennedy Karimnbinkala said.

The forum demanded expulsion of the priests for violating Church discipline.

The priests had accused the church heads of swindling money in the sale of 3 acres in Trikkakara here to clear debts. Stating that the section of priests would continue to speak truth without fear, Vicar Joseph Parekattil told mediapersons that they were not against the Archbishop but against wrongdoers.

He said the allegations could be examined to check their veracity. The allegations first surfaced in social media. When the media sought the response from the section of priests, they responded, he said.

How could a financially strong Ernakulam-Angamali Archdiocese go bankrupt and end up with a debt of Rs 90 crore, was the vital question, he said.
