Four-member gang arrested for cheating

Police on Thursday arrested a four-member gang, including two women, for cheating several people lakhs of rupees on the pretext of marrying them. According to police, Balamurugan, an IT professional, lodged a complaint that he decided to marry one Sruthi alias Mythili Venkatesh through a matrimonial agency some two years ago.

Sruthi, in the pretext of seeking help to treat her ailing mother had taken Rs.45 lakh in the last two years, after which she remained out of contact, the complaint lodged at the Cyber Crime cell, said.

The cell managed to trace Sruthi and took her mother Chitra and Prasanna Venkatesh, said to the father and one Subhash in P.N. Palayam in the city, they said.

Investigations revealed that the gang has cheated Rajkumar of Dindigul of Rs. 21 lakh, 20 sovereigns jewellery from Arulkumar in Chidambaram, Rs.15 lakh from Sundar in Nagapattinam, Rs. 43 lakh from Sathishkumar from Paramathivelur and Rs.22 lakh from Sasikumar of Namakkal over a period of time.

Sruthi would take the money, claiming that her mother was suffering from terminal disease.  All the four were produced before the court and remanded to custody.
