“Keeping the location turned on in your smart phone enables easy tracking. So always keep the location turned off unless necessary,” R. Vidhyapriya, Professor, Department of Information Technology, PSG College of Technology, said here.

As part of the Cyber Security Awareness Week-2015, a group of handpicked cops underwent a one day capsule course on mobile tracking in investigation of crime and cybercrime awareness at the PRS grounds auditorium on Thursday.

Dr M. Sudhakar, Superintendent of Police, Ayush Mani Tiwary, Deputy Inspector General, of Police and K. Shankar, Inspector General, West Zone, were present.

The morning session of the course covering the Digital Laws and legislation law enforcement roles and responses under the Information Technology Act (IT act), Indian Penal Code (IPC), and Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), was handled by S.N. Ravichandran, Data Security Council of India.

The post tea session was handled by Prof. Vidhyapriya. The second session threw light on mobile communication, Wi-Fi, and cellular networks. Various means of tracking a cell phone such as the International Mobile Equipment Identity number (IMEI), Electronic Serial Number (ESN), System Identification Code (SID), Mobile Identity Number (MIN) and how a cell phone call and towers work were also dealt with.

The cops were eager to grasp the knowledge that was being imparted. They raised doubts and questions during the session and the same was cleared by the resource persons.

The session closed for lunch after Dr. M. Sudhakar gave a short lecture on how the knowledge of mobile communication principles will help the police.
