Coimbatore : The Special Court for Prevention of Corruption Act here today dismissed the bail petition moved by Bharathiar University Vice-Chancellor A Ganapathy who was suspended in a bribery case.

Ganapathy, who was arrested for demanding and accepting Rs 30 lakh as bribe from an assistant professor aspirant on February 3 by sleuths of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), along with a chemistry professor Dharmaraj, who brokered the deal, and lodged them in the Central jail.

Both filed bail petitions in the court, which came up for hearing today, even as the Governor suspended Ganapathy following bribery charges.

There was strong objection from the Government side against granting the bail as it suspected that they would tamper with evidence.

The argument was that the some chemically treated notes, which were part of the bribe money of Rs 1 lakh, were torn and thrown into a sewage tank, in front of investigating officials by Ganapathy’s wife, during the operation.

Hearing arguments from both sides, Special Judge John Mino refused to grant bail to the duo.

DVAC filed a petition before the court seeking five days custody of the accused for further interrogation, which will come up for hearing tomorrow.

Meanwhile, 20 persons have lodged complaints with DVAC that the tainted Vice-Chancellor had accepted money for recruitment.
