Call to improve traffic safety, create better awareness in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: Development on the technological and economic front have made vehicles part of daily life, calling for improved traffic safety norms and better awareness.
Traffic signs are the oldest and most commonly used control devices. These are messages in words or symbols conveying regulation, warning, or guidance to the road users, both motorists and pedestrians. However, these signs cannot serve effectively their intended purpose if the driver cannot understand the information, according to traffic department officials.
D Anand, an advocate in the district court here, told The Covai Post that primary school-based road safety education could instill safe attitudes of young people early which should protect them. Education and awareness measures, such as road safety campaigns and community outreach programmes would certainly help to influence the attitudes and behaviours of all road users. Road Traffic Accident (RTA) related cases have topped the list of total attended cases in the city in 2017, he said.
According to Kanagan (name changed), 49 and shop owner, “The inclusion of the road safety in school curriculum should be done effectively with prescribed books, teaching them traffic sense, rules and measures. Education of traffic signs also plays a major role and workshops and seminars have to be conducted in schools so that they grow up to become responsible citizens.”
Road traffic injuries are a major but neglected public health challenge. There is the need for intensive efforts for effective and sustainable prevention. People must not ignore the traffic system.

Chandru, employed in a private company, said: “There is lack of awareness of basic traffic rules, absence of traffic signage and lights, and dangerous road conditions.
The government, activists and non-government organisations (NGOs) are not trying to address this problem. Indian road safety laws do not meet the best practice requirements for the risk factors – enforcing speed limits, prevention of drunk driving, safety of children and use of helmets. But the government plans to continue building highways and bridges without significant improvements in traffic infrastructure and road safety measures.”
Road safety awareness campaigns are an important tool to communicate with people in Coimbatore and share safe driving tips. But it has to be ensured that they are of the highest standard and have maximum impact.
“The traffic awareness programme for school students in Kovaipudur at the Children’s Traffic Park is one good step. Theory classes are conducted on traffic rules and regulations. Demonstration and visual footage of traffic obedience can influence children in future while driving vehicles and make them obey rules.
“The department aims to further reduce the number of children affected in road accidents through a range of measures including better road safety education for motorists and children as well,” said C L Sajini, Sub-Inspector of traffic police in Coimbatore.
