Rains continue to lash, Valparai bears the brunt

COIMBATORE: Plantation area, Valparai bore the brunt of incessant rains for the last five days, putting people, mostly estate workers into lot of hardship. There were reports of house collapse, uprooting of trees and land slide in Valparai due to continuous rains.

A woman was injured and hospitalised, as a tree fell on her house in Kamaraj Nagar there. Trees were uprooted following heavy winds accompanying the rains, resulting in snapping of electric wires, plunging the area into darkness, official sources said.

Rivers including Bhavani, Noyyal, Chinnar are full and ponds and lake are also to the brim. Heavy inflow is reported in Siruvani, the main drinking water source, as the water level haw increased, they said. Pilloor dam is also brimming to full, necessitating to release water to Bhavani river near Mettupalayam.

The level of Azhiyar Dam, with a capacity of 120 feet, has risen to nearly 58 feet, with an inflow of 240 cusecs, while Sholayar has reached 103 feet level. Water storage in Amaravathi in Tirupur has 64 feet, as against the capacity of 90 feet, sources added.

In view of the heavy rains, the administration has declared holiday to educational institutions in Coimbatore district.
