Coimbatore : With the President rejecting the mercy petitions of seven persons in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, the only recourse was legal remedy, TNCC president S Thirunavaukkarasu said today.

A solution could be found only legally since a case was pending in court, an there was no possibility of finding a political solution, Thirunavukkarasu told reporters here. Told that the mother of one of the accused opted
mercy killing for her son, Thirunavukkarasu said that might be the voice of a dejected mother, who was waiting for long to see the release of son Perarivalan.

On the disqualification case of 18 MLAs, with split verdict by two judge, the question cropped up whether they still held the post or not, he said. With justice hanging in balance, the third judge should expedite the verdict, since it was not the problem of legislators only, but that of nearly 40 lakh people in the constituencies, he said. The verdict would spell out whether the Government was stable or not, he added.

Thirunavukkarasu, who visited the Government Hospital here to console the victims of the bus accident in the Nilgiris, wanted the compensation to be increased to Rs 20 lakh from the present Rs 2 lakh and a government job to one member of the family who lost a family member.

He also wanted the Government to set up a multi speciality hospital in Udhagamandalam. It could be on the premises of Hindustan Photo Films, which was already closed.
