COIMBATORE: The Karamadai Block will soon be employing scientific waste management through Hub & Spoke model to maintain zero garbage in four panchayats.

Under the agreement signed between the block and ITC at Thekampatti on Tuesday, ITC will create awareness among the residents to segregate the garbage and guide the panchayat employees to do scientific waste management in Thekkampatti, Kemmarampalayam, Kalampalayam and Maradhur panchayats.

ITC has taken up the programme under the public-private community partnership on rural solid waste management under ‘Mission Sunehrakal’ that will be in force for three years. The pogramme will be supported by IMAYAM.

The Hub & Spoke model consists of a centralised processing centre or “hub” where waste will be sorted and taken care of. The surrounding communities that feed the “hub” with waste are called the “spokes”. The SWM will be implemented in this model in a phased manner.

A. Ravichandran, Block Development Officer, Karamadai Block signed the agreement with Pranav Sharma, ITC Packaging & Specialty Paper unit, (Kovai).

Under its CSR programme, ITC has worked with Chennai and Madurai Corporation in selected wards for making them ‘zero garbage wards’. They have also partnered with temple authorities and implemented circular economy model of waste management in Kapaleeshwarar and Anantha Padmanabha Swami temple in Chennai and Sri Ranganatha Swami temple in Srirangam.
