25,000 litres adulterated oil seized from Annur

Coimbatore: Officials of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India seized 25,000 litres of adulterated edible oil from a godown at Annur in the city on Thursday.

On basis of information, designated officer of FSSAI B Vijayalalithambigai along with the team rushed to the godown located and found it locked. On enquiry, locals said the workers had left some time ago.

Officials tried to contact godown owner Muthu Kumar, but failed. Officials approached the Mettupalayam Magistrate and obtained a search warrant to inspect the godown.

With the help of village administrative officer and police, officials broke open the locked godown and conducted a search. They found oil packed in tins and plastic barrels. Packaging machinery and printed films with the names of leading local brands and oil-filled tins were found in the godown. The oil was sent to FSSAI laboratory in Madurai.

The godown owner did not have a food safety licence. Action would be taken against the owner of the godown after the receiving the test result, Vijayalalithambigai, FSSAI Designated Officer, said.
