Coimbatore : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy will launch a programme to upscale the skills of 1.5 lakh weavers and workers in the textile sector at the global textile expo here on January 27.

According to the programme, the Textile Sector Skill Council (TSSC) will provide training to 25,000 handloom weavers, 50,000 in the powerloom sector, 25,000 in spinning mills, 15,000 in knitting and 10,000 in processing under different courses, chairman T Rajkumar told reporters here Saturday.

The target would be met during 2019-20, he said on the sidelines of a meeting of stakeholders, including council members.

Weavers and textile workers attending the course would be given a certificate, which would help them get subsidised loans and avail of the Centre’s scheme of 75 per cent financial assistance to set up looms, he said

Council CEO Dr J V Rao said that under scheme handloom weavers were educated in digital learning, mobile banking, importance of e-commerce and awareness on health and hygiene in working area.

To help textile mills, especially of Tamil Nadu, meet manpower requirement, the council had been instrumental in getting training targets released to them under the short duration programme of up to two months, he said.

The council was also helping mills in the State to meet their huge requirement of skilled workforce through the job melas and so far had channelised about 30 textile industries in more than 20 such melas, Rajkumar said.
