It was a regular day at Brookefields Mall. But for Hemalatha R. and Sasikala Sunderam it was a visit with a difference. The two homemakers, who are neighbours and residents of R.S. Puram, had come to participate in the organ donation awareness camp organised by Coimbatore United Round Table (CURT) 186, Gem Hospital and Research Centre Pvt. Ltd. and Wallcliffs Law Firm.

Like them nearly 500 people from Coimbatore came ahead and officially registered to pledge their organs at this camp. A majority of them were students. Donors were given the option to pledge select organs like their cornea (eyes), liver, heart, lungs, kidneys, skin, pancreas, or their whole body.

“The month of November is considered as a Round Table India month where tables throughout India do various charitable works in their respective cities to commemorate the birth of Round Table India which falls on November 14. We at CURT 186 organized a limb donation project, eye and dental camp, blood donation camp, planted trees in busy areas in the city and also arranged for breakfast for inmates of homes in the city. And, also this organ donation awareness camp,” Sunil Nagpal, Vice Chair, CURT 186 said.

CURT 186 that now has about 20 members came into being in 2004. The group of philanthropists continue to raise funds for their long term project titled ‘Freedom through Education (FTE)’. CURT 186 has also constructed 21 classrooms in schools that are located in rural areas.
