Bus travel irks regular travellers

Though it seems like there is a considerable increase in the number of two-wheelers and cars plying on the road, it is a surprise to know that there are still many who prefer to use the big four-wheeler – the bus. Hence, the employed and students alike who regularly use the public bus, have a grouse that bus drivers do not stop the bus at designated stops during peak hours.

M. Priya (21), a college student from Thennampalayam says: “I need to take a bus at 8 a.m. to my college located near SITRA. I wait for more than half-an-hour to get a bus. More than 500 college and school students board the bus from my bus stop. During peak hours, only four to five buses stop. Due to this, most of the times I miss my morning classes.”

Karthick (16), studying in a Government school near the airport says: “I travel using bus pass. Conductors do not treat those travelling using pass like they do those travelling on ticket. Sometimes he will not allow me to sit even if the seats are free. On Saturdays he compels me to buy a ticket even though I have a pass. Most of the buses never stop when they see a group of school children.”

According to S. Munusami, Regional Transport Officer of Peelamedu, buses arrive late during peak hours because of heavy traffic. He promised to take steps to solve the problems faced by pass holders and the employed who miss buses regularly. He has welcomed complaints against bus drivers who do not stop at the stand.
