In order to curb traffic violations in the city, the city police will soon be having an extra eye on every signal in the form of CCTV cameras as they are currently in the process of overhauling the CCTC cameras that are already installed in signals in the city.

The city police had on 2010 for the World Tamil Conference installed 184 cameras on signals where most crimes were identified. It was announced then that when vehicles violate signal rules, the cameras capture a photograph of the vehicle thereby sending it to the control room. The owners of the vehicles would be immediately sent a notice to pay the fine for violations.

However, the cameras did not serve the purpose as most of the cameras did not work properly. In an attempt to refurbish the signals, the city police have started to replace damaged cameras with cameras in working condition.
“The work has begun and is going on full-fledged,” said Commissioner of Police A.Amalraj.

He further added that the project would soon be completed soon so that it would help curb traffic violations.
“There will be a special monitory system that would directly monitoring the footages and vehicles in all signals,” he told the Covai Post.

The CCTV drive which was started by former COP AK Vishwanathan, has covered most of the arterial roads in the city. The city police also conducted drives to install cameras in every household and street in the city to curb crimes.
Besides overhauling and replacing the faulty cameras, CoP Amalraj said that the signals which are not functioning properly are also being repaired.
