An RTI activist, who alleged that a government reserve land near Vadavalli was illegally being sold to private parties, was detained by police today. The incident happened following the Council Meeting at the Coimbatore Corporation office.

The Coimbatore civic body had on Tuesday passed a resolution allowing sale of a piece of land, near V.N.R. Nagar at Vadavalli in the North Zone, to private parties.

However, an RTI activist has alleged that the Corporation did not have any power to allow sale of land based on an RTI he has filed.

According to the RTI, the Town Planning Authority had stated that the Corporation could not alter the plot as it was a reserve area.

Raising this issue, activist Thyagarajan raised slogans against the civic body for illegally altering the plot details. He further alleged that the proposal should be revised immediately and added that the civic body should cancel the resolution.

However, he was immediately countered by ADMK councillors who attempted to grab the copy of the RTI from him. Thyagarajan was immediately detained by police personnel and taken away from the Corporation campus.
