Upset over her dream of studying abroad going kaput, a 21-year-old student committed suicide by consuming poison in her house in Singanallur here.

Haripriya, who had completed B. Tech in a private college and got a placement in a private firm, wanted to study M. Tech abroad. However, her father, Rajendran reportedly told her that she being the only daughter the parents did not want to live without her. She was asked to accept the job offer.

Dejected over the negative reply, Haripriya consumed poison in her house in Masakalipalayam and fell unconscious. Seeing this, her mother, 44-year old Chandrakala also consumed poison and swooned, police said.

Rajendran who returned home some time later was surprised to see both the wife and daughter lying unconscious. He immediately took them to a private hospital.

However, Haripriya died on the way to hospital, while Chandrakala was still in a critical condition, police added.

Haripriya’s body was sent to Government hospital for post mortem.
