Making the most of the New Year revelries, burglars struck at two houses in Mettupalayam and decamped with cash and ornaments worth more than Rs.8 lakhs. The house owners were away, attending the New Year prayers.

According to police, saw mill owner Shaktivadivel, residing at Karamadai Main Road, had gone with his family to attend special prayers at around 10 PM on December 31. When the family returned home at 3.00 AM, they were stunned to find the front door of the house open. Three almirahs were broken into and 25 sovereigns of gold and cash of Rs.2.5 lakhs were missing.

The burglars had then gained entry into the house of one of the neighbours, Rajasingh, a provision store owner. He too had gone to attend prayers with his family. He found Rs.50,000, 15 sovereign of gold ornaments, and some silver articles missing. Police are investigating.
