Anxious moments prevailed at a traffic signal in the city today, when a youth attempted to cut his throat, reportedly to commit suicide, with a piece of glass, in full public view.

As people were waiting at the R.S. Puram signal on Mettupalayam Road, a 32-year old man walked towards the signal and tried to cut his throat using a piece of glass.

Though public tried to intervene, he refused to let them come close by brandishing the glass piece, police said.

A traffic police constable rushed and managed to contain him, but sustained injuries on his hand. This required force to be summoned from a nearby police station.

A group of police, who arrived there, managed to overpower the man, who was in an inebriated condition. He is yet to be identified. The man was admitted to the Government hospital here, after the 30-minute drama.
