Left hemiglossectomy with radical neck dissection was performed on a 55-year-old man at SLV Hospital. The man, who was in the habit of chewing tobacco for the past 10 years, had developed cancer.
Dr. A. Suresh Venkatachalam, surgical oncologist performed the procedure, which involved the removing of the left portion of the patient’s tongue. The surgery took five hours. The left side of his neck was also opened up and all the nodes that were affected by cancer were cleared by the team of surgeons.
After discharge from the hospital, the patient was able to speak within a period of four days. He has also been advised chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which he would undergo in the days to come.
