Coimbatore is known for its spirit of entrepreneurship. This city also has, in the past, made and continues to make impressive literary contributions. The Coimbatore Book Club, established in 1966, is today one of the oldest book clubs in the city. “Coimbatore Book Club is an anomaly in the public perception because one of the oldest book clubs in this part of the country exists here and the Coimbatore Book Club is very active and vibrant, regularly hosting book reviews, author interactions, and play readings.” Jayshree V. Murthy, past secretary of Coimbatore Book Club, says.

Currently, the club, which begins its new year every January, has about 30 members. They meet on the first Sunday of the month. At such meetings, books are launched, and those interested in reviewing a book of their choice are permitted to do so. The club has provided a platform to several of its members to review books that they cherish. The reviewer also answers questions about the book.

Recently, this club hosted its annual meeting and released a souvenir to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The book titled ‘The Ivory Throne, Chronicles of the House of Travancore,’ authored by Manu S. Pillai, was reviewed by Pierce Nigli.

‘The Ivory Throne’ conjures up a dramatic world of political intrigues and factions, black magic and conspiracies, crafty ceremonies and splendorous temple treasures, all harnessed in a tragic contest for power and authority in the age of the empire.

“You do not have to be a voracious reader in order to become a member of the Coimbatore Book Club. If you appreciate the art of reading, you are most welcome as a member,” Jayshree says.

Coimbatore Book Club is open to membership. For membership information, contact 92444-12401
